Ive been wanting to get into fantasy weaponry. I am a really big fan of Monster Hunter and wanted to model something in the style of the oversized weapons known from the series.
Programs Used: Blender
The Reference
I found a piece of concept art from Fredrik Amting on Artstation (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/BmE24A) and decided to use it as the basis for my 3D model practice. This is my first sword.
Modeling
To begin I started with the handle, pommel, and guard. They are all mostly basic shapes. I just used a combination of extrusions, loop cuts, and scaling.
I then moved to the guard. I just used beveling, loop cuts, and manipulated vertices where I needed them to be.
I then moved to the blade. This was a challenge and took me many hours of fiddling to figure out. The proportions were tough to get correct, as well as the proper crescent shape in the blade. It has a fine curve that was hard to replicate exactly. I am happy with this in the end and am looking forward to learning more.
Moving on, I then modeled the metal plate that is on either side of the sword. I used a cube primitive and shaped it with added loops and cuts so it fit the contour of the blade. I also cut a few spheres in half and used them as the bolts along the sword. I also modeled the spiked that line the spine of the sword. Finally, I booleaned out some holes in the sword to match the concept.
Final Asset
The colors are all made using the node editor. I used a color ramp to create gradient color across the blade, and used a split XYZ node to control where the gradient began. I also used basic colors for the rest of the pieces albedo.
